After the 1525 Pirate’s raid, the old walls were strengthened bynew fortified castle walls, which are still preserved in some places, in the east andsouth-east, and were provided with a tower, called of battle, in order to defend the town and the port below. The entry to the town was possible through Marina Door in the east and Castello Door in the west, still visible, and Maggiore Door in the south, now destroyed.
The tower of Battle, circle based, is rounded off by winding embattlements which constitute today the parapet to the belvedere realised on the top of the tower.
A recent restoration has let the reopening of the structure which houses the museum dedicated to the sculptor Pericle Fazzini (1913-1987) artist of the well-known Resurrection in the Paolo VI’s Vatican Room, who was born in Grottammare and kept all his life a close emotional and creative relationship with his home town. The works exhibited in the museum,belong to the Foundation Cassa di Risparmio of Ascoli Piceno, and were entrusted to the Town Council of Grottammare. The Museum will present through periodical thematic exhibitions, the whole collection made up of 250 works, including drawings, printings, small sculptures made of different materials testifying both the complex workshop and the well-organized inspiration of the artist.
The exhibition rooms of the Tower are one of the stage Fazzini’s itinerary which passes by the beach and the ancient buildings through the Boy with seagulls, the Metamorphosis, the Pericle Fazzini’ club, the Portrait of Mario Rivosecchi, Via Crucis (in St. Agostino’s Church) following the presences on the town connected to the artist, defined by Giuseppe Ungaretti “sculptor of the wind”.
BATTLE TOWER MUSEUM
In the rooms of the Battle Tower bronze models, drawings, litographies, notebooks and other precious objects are displayed. They were given by Pericle Fazzini to his favourite model Lisa Schneider: a collection of 250 works, bought by the Foundation Cassa di Risparmio of Ascoli Piceno, testifying both the complex workshop and the well-organized inspiration of the sculptor of the wind”.
