It was here that the orange tree from which the theatre takes its name was planted, tended by a representative of the local council chosen each year from among the village’s families, who received a tax exemption in return.

Simple and symmetrical, the brick façade designed by Maggi is arranged in three orders of varying heights. In the second order there is a niche housing a statue of Pope Sixtus V, a native of Grottammare, created in 1794 by Stefano Interlenghi. On the left-hand side of the façade stands the bell tower, characterised by three superimposed elements: a niche containing a Madonna and Child, a clock donated by Pope Pius IX in 1857, and a bell gable surmounted by a small pediment.

The interior of the theatre, entirely fitted out in wood, featured a stalls area, three tiers of boxes and a stage. It could accommodate at least 250 people, divided between members of wealthy families (for whom the boxes were reserved) and those from the working classes (who were only allowed into the stalls). Unfortunately, no trace of the original furnishings remains, as during the ‘Spanish’ flu pandemic of 1918–1920, with a shortage of timber to build coffins for the numerous victims, it was necessary to remove it from the theatre.

Indeed, it was precisely its wooden interior that had led the authorities to order its closure in 1899 on safety grounds, although certain exemptions subsequently allowed a final theatre season to be held there in 1908. In 2003, following a complete restoration, the theatre was reopened, returning to its original purpose.

The theatre currently houses the Spazio Museale Gianni Ottaviani

[113
post-6492","luoghi","type-luoghi","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","tipologia-luoghi-historic-buildings
["GET
