by Cleto Capponi
The Monument to the Sail is a work created in 1984 by the artist Cleto Capponi, who was associated with the Futurist art movement.
The work – a globe surmounted by several stylised metal sails – draws on the contrast between the forms and materials used in the two blocks that make up the sculpture, naturally highlighting that dialogue between solid and void, between matter and transparency, which lies at the heart of all exploration of form in the visual arts, foremost among which is, of course, sculpture.
